AI for small businesses: where to start

Start with the work, not the technology

Plenty of AI initiatives begin with “we ought to be using this somehow” and fizzle out without delivering anything concrete. A better route is to look at your processes first and pick out the tasks that are repetitive and time-consuming.

Simply asking teams which jobs eat up most of their week is a good starting point. Often the answers include tasks that a straightforward automation could handle without any AI at all, which is a useful finding in its own right.

Realistic first use cases

The best places for a smaller business to begin are tasks where a person can easily check the output. That keeps the risk of errors low and gives the team a chance to get to know the tools.

  • Answering questions from internal documents
  • Drafting replies to customer emails
  • Summarising meeting notes
  • First drafts of proposals and product copy
  • Sorting incoming requests by topic

Data privacy and compliance

Anything you type into an AI tool is processed by the tool’s provider. Before sharing customer personal data, commercial secrets or contract details, read the provider’s terms on data retention and use.

Where personal data is involved, your obligations under data protection law apply, including KVKK in Turkey and GDPR where relevant, particularly around transfers abroad. A short internal policy setting out which data may go into which tools heads off most problems.

Human review and measuring the benefit

AI models can produce answers that sound convincing but are simply wrong. That’s why anything going out to a customer should be checked by a member of staff, certainly in the early stages.

  • Measure how long the task takes before you start
  • Repeat the measurement after a few weeks
  • Keep track of errors and corrections
  • Gather feedback from the team regularly
